Elizabeth and Hazel: Two Women of Little Rock
In September 1957 a drama unfolded in Little Rock Arkansas as 9 black students attempted to enter Central High School. The 9 had been selected to integrate the school in response to the 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education. An iconic photo reproduced in newspapers around the world inspired David Margolick to write the subject of today's East End Ink, Elizabelh and Hazel: Two Women of Little Rock. The photo showed a white student, Hazel Bryan spewing racial abuse at Elizabeth Eckford as Elizabeth walked past the school in front of an angry white crowd. The nine black students were allowed to enter Central High only after President Dwight Eisenhower called in federal troops.
